Conor McGregor And Khabib’s 2014 Twitter Exchange Shows It Could All Have Been So Different
When Conor McGregor and Khabib Nurmagomedov stepped into the UFC Octagon it was the culmination of one of the most intense rivalries in the history of MMA.
McGregor and his teams attack of Nurmagomedov’s bus prior to UFC 223 was all over the headlines but was just the most recent instalment of the beef between the two top lightweights.
The hatred between the two really started heating up back in 2016. On the same night that McGregor made history by becoming the first ever simultaneous two-weight UFC champion with an incredible performance against Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205, Khabib had demonstrated his incredible wrestling skills in a dominant victory over Michael Johnson earlier on the card.
The two had a brief confrontation prior to the fights that night before been quickly separated. But their paths were soon to be on an irreversible collision course.

McGregor’s historic victory saw him move up to the 155lbs weight class and put a fight with Khabib firmly on the horizon. This was further cemented just two weeks after UFC 205 when Khabib first called McGregor out. The Russian shared a screenshot of a twitter DM he had sent the Irishman.

Since then the two have gone back and forth with no love lost, however, it hasn’t always been that way. In fact, a Twitter exchange from way back in 2014 shows that the two were once actually on pretty friendly terms with each other as Khabib even wanted to own a McGregor t-shirt.
Funnily enough, this isn’t the only time that the two rivals have been seen on much friendlier terms. This photo from 2014 makes them look like best buds, and far from the fierce rivals, they would soon become.
However, something tells me that this rivalry is far from over.
