Derrick ‘The Black Beast’ Lewis Almost Decapitates Alexander Volkov
Derrick Lewis continued his push toward a heavyweight title shot on Saturday when he defeated fellow contender Alexander Volkov in a key matchup at UFC 229.
Lewis (21-5 MMA, 12-3 UFC) earned his ninth victory in his past 10 fights when he beat Volkov (30-7 MMA, 4-1 UFC) by dramatic third-round knockout in the pay-per-view matchup from T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. “The Black Beast” may not be next in line for the belt, but with his recent record, he’s certainly close.
The fight was dominated by Volkov and was likely up 30-27 on the cards at the time of the finish. Volkov was the aggressor from the very start of the fight as he pursued Lewis across the cage, coming after him with his long reach with both punches and kicks.
The first real damaging shot came when Volkov landed a kick straight to Lewis’ midsection that sent him backwards towards the cage. The Russian followed up with a barrage of punches but Lewis was able to weather the storm and get away from the cage.
UFC heavyweight Derrick Lewis celebrated a stunning knockout victory at UFC 229 in a rather unusual way – by stripping down to his pants and throwing his sweat-soaked shorts into the crowd.
“I need to sit my black ass down and do some cardio,” Lewis said when asked about entering title contention following his latest win. “I ain’t trying to fight for the title right now.”
Everyone in the media center just went apeshit.

Jesus Christ. Derrick Lewis, every fucking time, gassed as hell and dying, somehow killing a man with just seconds left on the clock. You could not possibly invent or write this man's steez. I was literally yelling "NO FUCKING WAY" at my screen with every GNP coffin nail.
