83-Year-Old Irish Punter Helps Fight Off Three Armed Gangsters
They say that age is just a number. But when you get into your 80s, there are surely things that men can generally no longer do without assistance such as maintain a rock-hard erection or go out to get the morning paper. But an elderly man in an Irish betting shop has proven that not all octogenarians are pushovers! Not only does he lay a mean bet, but also a mean punch, as you can see in the clip below where he deals with not one, but three armed intruders!
The CCTV footage from two angles opens with a relatively sleepy and quiet scene. The clerk of the shop stands casually by the counter and there does not appear to be too many other betters in the shop. But that is when things change dramatically and quickly!
In rush three men, one armed with a hammer. Two of them jump the counter to have at the shop’s earnings in a fierce and scary hold up. One guy with a an Adidas hoodie pulled up far over his head so as to conceal his identity bundles up the attendant. He waves the hammer violently in his face threateningly whilst making his demands.
But that’s when we see what is going on the background. Another one of the bandits wearing a grey hoodie is struggling with another man who it is revealed to be the 83-year-old hero of the story, Denis O’Connor. The Great-grandfather delivered a few blows to the man more than half his age whilst providing enough resistance to make the three men rethink their move.
Taking off with merely what was in the cash drawer, the thieves made a run for it, but not before O’Connor gave one of them an almighty kick in the ass as he fled. The fact that the trio of robbers was unable to get access to the safe on account of Mr O’Connor’s actions makes him a hero.
Forever humble, as old legends tend to be, Mr O’Connor said:
“When I saw them confronting him [the attendant] I just acted”
