Cowboy’s Forehead Explodes And Blood Squirts Everywhere After Gunnar Nelson Elbows Him

The welterweight matchup between Alex ‘Cowboy’ Oliveira and Gunnar Nelson will be remembered for a disgustingly bloody finish. Whilst MMA fans are used to the blood that goes with the extreme sport, the speed with which the blood flowed saw a stunned hush come over the crowd until the fight was finished shortly after. The 2nd round submission could not come fast enough for Oliveira who was blinded by the river of blood that was gushing from his forehead.

In the lead up to the fight, Oliveira (19-6-1 MMA, 9-4 UFC) was confident of a victory but weary of Nelson’s supreme ground-game. The #13-ranked welterweight said, “I know he’s good on the ground game, and I’ve been focusing on that,” Oliveira said. “But for him to get me on the ground he has to get near me, and he’s going to have to pass through (my fist).”

After clinging to the cage in the first round to avoid a takedown, the referee paused proceedings, giving a stern warning. Upon restart, Cowboy was able to escape a solid Nelson takedown and dish out some strikes.

The second round started with Nelson receiving more punishment as Oliveira got up pressed up against the cage wall. A potentially broken nose caused Nelson a fair amount of discomfort and bloodshed. Towards the end of the round, Nelson was able to get a top mount on the back of a powerful takedown. From there, brutal, highly audible elbows opened up Cowboy’s forehead which began to bleed profusely.

His blindness led to a brief rear-naked choke before the referee called things off. Post-fight, Nelson said:

“That was definitely not how I expected the fight to go, but I am very happy to finish him in the second,” Nelson said. “He came out fast, and I had to adjust my plan just a bit. He caught me with a shot that I thought was to the back of my head, but maybe it wasn’t. Whatever it was, he certainly got me good with that one. However, in the second, things started to change, and I found the finish I was looking for.”
