Amanda Nunes Does The Impossible And Slept Cris Cyborg In The First Round
In what has been called the biggest women’s UFC fight of all time, Cris Cyborg Santos and Amanda Nunes faced off tonight for the UFC Women’s Featherweight Championship. The fight marked the first time a reigning female UFC champion had stepped up to try and claim a second belt in the same way Conor McGregor and Daniel Cormier had done in the lightweight and heavyweight categories respectively.
Despite being unquestionably worthy of being referred to as a super fight, the contest had flown somewhat under the radar due to the Jones vs. Gustafsson main event and the doping controversy that had surrounded it.
Nunes made the step up to 145lbs after having comprehensively disposed of all of the contenders she faced at women’s bantamweight. In her last fight, Nunes finished a resilient Raquel Pennington in the championship rounds to cement her position as the undisputed queen of 135lbs.
For those unacquainted with Nunes’ handiwork, take a look at her destruction of Ronda Rousey, in a fight that marked the last time we have seen the former Olympian in the Octagon.
Meanwhile, going into this fight Cyborg was riding a 21 fight unbeaten streak, with her only loss coming in her first professional contest. In her UFC career Cyborg had gone 5-0 with only former 135lbs champion Holly Holm managing to even go the distance with the feared Brazilian.
Because of much of the public’s attention being on the Jon Jones controversy, it was easy to miss the war of words going on between Cyborg and Nunes prior to their fight. At the pre-fight press conference, both women clearly showed their dislike of one another, with Cyborg remarking about how she was unhappy about how Nunes was unwilling to fight earlier in 2018. Cyborg also referenced the fact that Nunes had to pull out of her fight at UFC 213 on the day of the fight.
When the two squared off at the weigh-ins yesterday, it was clear that there was no love lost between these two, and it showed in the fight.
In an incredible performance, Amanda Nunes cements herself as the greates woman’s mixed martial artist of all time.
