Doctors Force Barboza To Quit After Kevin Lee Reshapes His Head
Kevin Lee has notched up a superb win against Edson Barboza in a five round epic at UFC Atlantic City. The fight took place at catchweight, fought at 157 pound due to Lee not being able to make weight for the lightweight division. Both men were carrying great form coming into the fight with Barboza winning three of his last four starts and Lee winning five of his last six.
Drawn as the main card for the event in front of a huge crowd at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey, the opening round saw the Brazilian Barboza escape from a Lee mount. After a quick scramble, Lee was back on top again and this time Barboza was in a pretty vulnerable position. Raining blow after blow down on Edson, Lee switched freely between lefts, hammerfists and elbows. The end of the round saved Barboza from a swift end.
After a similarly one-sided second round, Barboza had to bring something out of the bag to stay in the fight. He was able to deliver some heavy knees but not gain the upper hand. Late in the round, a knee had Lee grimacing for the first time in the bout. It could have been all over in the fourth when Lee left his run to chokehold too late.
The men engaged for a fifth and final round with the scorecard seeing Lee as having the upper hand, and Barboza needing a knockout to take the victory. The fighters exchanged blows with Barboza being caught on the chin before executing a spinning kick that was blocked by Lee. The Brazilian had by this time taken a lot of hits to his right eye which began to bleed again. Doctors entered the cage to attend and referee Keith Peterson stopped the fight with Lee being awarded a TKO.
The fight sees Lee return to the winners’ list after being submitted by Tony Ferguson in October last year. It’s now two losses in a row for Edson Barboza who has now not won a fight in over a year.
