Stylebender and Gastelum Put on Fight of Year With Epic Slugfest

The massive doubleheader that UFC 236 threw at us saw the co-main event contested between Kelvin Gastelum and Israel Adesanya. The fight would ultimately decide who would become the UFC’s interim middleweight champion. Adesanya would go into the fight as the favourite after a heavy plunge on the young Nigerian-born New Zealander. The Atlanta crowd was in for a treat with Adesanya’s kickboxing matching up against the experienced contrasting BJJ style favoured by Gastelum.

Adesanya has enjoyed a meteoric rise to fame after 5 years gaining extensive experience in the Hex and AFC competitions. It was here that the 29-year-old won two Middleweight Championships before a hectic ‘question mark kick’ saw the ears of UFC scouts prick up. Adesanya would continue his astounding unbeaten run with notable victories over Derek Brunson and Anderson Silva, barely two months ago, on his way to 16-0.

Gastelum had a good run in the lead up to UFC 236 with the only exception being a submission loss to Chris Weidman back in 2017. It was the only time the Ultimate Fighter champion had been defeated by any means other than decision as he propelled himself to 15-3 (1) professional record over his 9-year career.

Adesanya is notably on track from a match-up for the ages with Jon Jones after a war of words between the pair resulted in a call out from the champ.
