GGG Lights Up Opponent With Multi Punch Tekken-esque Combination
StubHub Center in Carson, California was home to an epic showdown between Gennady “GGG” Golovkin and Vanes Martirosyan on Saturday, May 5th.
Golovkin was originally billed to fight in an IBF-sanctioned middleweight title against Mexican Canelo Alvarez.
The Cinco de Mayo fight was pulled after Alvarez failed two drug tests in the lead-up. He was banned from boxing for six months.
Martirosyan stepped in with only four weeks’ notice, his last bout being way back in May 2016 losing to Erislandy Lara.
The first round saw the Armenian-born Martirosyan lay some pretty decent power punches. And whilst GGG seemed to be feeling his opponent out he did land some of his own including a lot of softer jabs.
Despite many believing Martirosyan laid better power shots, the judges scored the round in Golovkin’s favour 10-9,
It was only a matter of time before Golovkin got a feel for things and started to get down to business. That time was the second round, he sent the Armenian to the ropes with a right uppercut.
The staggering Martirosyan was rattled and never stood a chance from that moment. Two GGG straight rights followed by a pair of left hooks sent him crashing to the canvas.
Clamboring to a knee, Martirosyan looked all at sea. Seeking solace in the canvas, he leaned forward before trying to get to his feet.
Referee Jack Reiss made it to a full ten-count as Martirosyan went back down.
Whilst not his best work, Golovkin landed 36 of 84 punches thrown 42.9%. Martirosyan connected with just 18 of 73 at 24.7%. Post-fight, Martirosyan said. “That’s the hardest puncher I’ve ever faced.”
The loss continues his fall from grace.
After winning his first 32 bouts, the 32-year-old has not lost two on the trot and four of his last 7 starts. GGG, on the other hand, has continued his incredible undefeated run. His only blemish, a draw with Alvarez last year.
There is talk of a rematch when Alvarez returns from suspension.
