Gabi ‘Godzilla’ Garcia just strangled her latest opponent into submission

Gabi ‘Godzilla’ Garcia graced the stage last night at the South Korean export, ROAD Fighting Championship 47 in Beijing.

The bout was Garcia’s first fight since her last ill-fated No Contest in July last year.

Garcia’s opponent Oksana Gagloeva succumbed to an eye poke barely 10 seconds into the fight, a situation for which Garcia branded her a coward whilst appealing the decision.

She faced controversy once again prior to the eye poke when her fight against Megumi Yabushita was stopped, that time for a soccer kick.

Garcia was supposed to return to fighting a scheduled bout with retired Japanese wrestling star Shinobu Kandori.

The showdown was cancelled when Garcia farcically missed weight by over 10 kilograms.

The fight also marked the first time the 32-year-old undefeated star has lined up outside of Japan’s Rizin Fighting Federation.

A packed house at Cadillac Arena witnessed the Brazilian jiu-jitsu fighter’s return. Garcia won her first four MMA bouts, two by KO and two by submission.

Garcia lined up against four-time Russian Hand-to-Hand combat champ Veronika Futina, out to avenge two of Garcia’s defeated opponents, Gagloeva and Anna Malyukova. Futina, a former Sambo fighter, was given a lesson in her MMA debut, Garcia making easy work of the youngster.

Openweight bout was completely one-sided with ‘Godzilla’s’ height, weight and strength advantages too much for Futina to handle. The aggression on display was best seen in an almighty takedown early in the first round.

From there, the Brazilian parked her colossal 106 kg frame on Funtina’s back, a position impossible to get out of. By leaning forward, Garcia effectively suffocated Funtina in a rarely-seen sweaty armpit manoeuvre. A few strikes late and Futina had submitted.

That brings up a 5th MMA win without a loss for the 32-year-old star who cannot seem to put a foot wrong. Her impressive frame coupled with amazing Jiu Jitsu skill has proven to be a formidable mix.

It was a tough task for Futina on debut but no doubt she will be back in the cage soon.
