Heartbreaking Video Of Brian Ortega’s Coach “I Won’t Let You Die In There!”
UFC 231’s main card showdown between Brian Ortega and Max Holloway was one of the more bloody events of the night. The featherweight fight that had been scheduled for UFC 226 back in July was postponed and fans finally got the chance to see Ortega in action after nearly a year on the sidelines. Ortega is a man who has shown tremendous fight over the course of his life, in and out of the MMA world. His resilience has placed him among the most dominant and popular fighters going around.
Up until UFC 231, Ortega had not been beaten. A 13-fight winning streak, with one no contest was snapped by a doctor stoppage after the 4th round. Holloway’s dominance proved to be too much for the LA local. Holloway successfully defended his featherweight title for the third time and was full of respect for his opponent after the fight.
After focusing on his right eye, which had all but closed over, the doctor made the call that it was too dangerous to continue and, much to Ortega’s protest at the time, the fight was waved off. An elated Holloway vaulted the cage, retrieving his kid and celebrating as a family.
Ortega was less disappointed in hindsight. Such a fierce competitor, he understands that his adrenalin can overshadow his common sense, which is a universal problem with fighters in the pursuit of glory at any cost. Post-fight he wrote:
“Doctor stopped it and I agree. Broken nose and a broken thumb… I was willing to die in there. Last night was Max’s night. I’ll be back. Thank you to everyone who’s always believed in me and supported me.”
Video of Ortega receiving treatment at the end of the 4th and being addressed by coach Rener Gracie in his corner has gone viral. Check it out here.
