Sugar Ray KOs Disrespectful Sparring Partner In Front of Hundreds Of Cruise Ship Passengers
How many amateur fighters dream of pulling on the gloves for a cheeky spar with one of their idols? It’s obviously a privilege and a pinnacle that few ever get to experience. But for Amateur boxer, Steve Sinclair from the UK, the dream became a reality in 1992 when he got to box the legendary Sugar Ray Leonard.
Steve was working aboard the QE2 and was well known among the crew as being pretty handy with his fists. The word got around the ship that Sugar Ray was going to be a passenger which saw an exhibition fight put on and, just like that, Steve’s dream was coming true. The fight was supposed to be a bit of fun for the benefit of the passengers, but as the clip below shows, things got a tad out of hand!
Leonard was at the time the welterweight champion of the world and was recently recovering from an eye operation. The trip on the QE2 was meant to be relaxing for the star, but a captive audience of passengers meant that he had to do a bit of work as well! Sinclair was warned to be careful not to redamage Sugar Ray’s eye.
But has the exhibition went on, the waiter started to exhibit a bit of showmanship and cockiness, putting a bit extra into his punches and actually feeling Sugar Ray buckle as he struck him. Then a quick jab landed flush on Leonard’s eye drawing gasps from the crowd. Whilst Sugar Ray cracked a grin, he was fed up and got down to business.
Much to the crowd’s delight, Sugar Ray demonstrated the difference between a professional fighter and a cruise ship waiter as he delivered body shot after body shot. A low hook to the ribs knocked the wind out of Sinclair who went down in pain. “Every time I watch it, I feel it,” Sinclair said. Clearly winded and unable to continue, the two somewhat amicably parted ways.
