VIDEO: Jimi Manuwa Gets Folded By Thiago Santos In The 2nd Round
With the featherweight contest between Renato Moicano and Mirsad Bektić cancelled, the crowd at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto were treated to a light heavyweight shootout to open the main card at UFC 231. Muay Thai and Capoeira specialist Thiago Santos displayed his all-out fighting style to take down Brit, Jimi Manuwa in the second round.
The pair had been due to meet back in September however Manuwa had to withdraw with a hamstring tear. Santos beat Eryk Anders in his light heavyweight debut. Manuwa was on the defensive for much of the first round. He showed tremendous fortitude to stand up to a barrage of hooks and being able to counterpunch his way to a clinch.
The real action came with the opening to the second. From the get-go, Santos’ powerful left came to the fore, hooking his way to advantage. This time when the pair clinched up, Manuwa was able to continue on, nearly executing a trip to take things to the deck. Manuwa nearly got Santos pressed up against the cage, but a big left knee and left hook saw the tables turned, and the Brit found himself compromised against the cage.
From there a brutal elbow and a hook were all it took to see Manuwa finished, referee Todd Anderson coming in to wave off the fight capping an impressive victory for the Brazilian. Post-fight, Santos said:
“That was the strategy — I came here to show that I can hit hard and that I’m here to stay,” Santos said.
“It was fun, it was marvellous. I want to make my opponents feel pain until they can’t bear it anymore.”
