VIDEO: MMA Fans Scream as Ref Won’t Stop Match During Vicious Beatdown
Austin Hubbard’s LFA 56 win was a memorable one. Not only did the American take out the lightweight title but he took out Killys Mota (11-1)who was running in as the overwhelming favourite. But after 4 even rounds and a mere minute left on the clock, the fight looked like it was going to decision, but Hubbard (10-2) had a bit left in the tank and used to unleash on Mota, eventually gaining the TKO. But as you will see, the damage was done well before the wave-off and controversy will always make this fight memorable for the wrong reasons.
Referee Joe Fipp’s reputation has been cast into the gutter after not taking what seemed to many to be the prime opportunity to stop the fight. The crowd art Mystic Lake Hotel and Casino in Prior Lake, Minnesota was going wild after the American dropped the Brazilian to the floor amidst a barrage of snaps.
Fipp made like he was going to come in to stop things, but pulled out at the last second. Viewers and commentators alike were baffled as he looked to be in a bad way. As the crowd voiced their concern and abused Fipp for letting things continue, Mota continued to be battered with minimal defence. The commentary team summed it up perfectly in real time.
“He started to step in to stop it and then backed back out.
Stop the fight! Stop the fight!
This is a joke. He’s not defending himself!
What do you want?”
Eventually after a brutal minute of striking, Fipp decided enough was enough, waving things off. The usual cheers that greet such a stoppage were replaced with a chorus of boos as the crowd and commentators made their thoughts known.
“Now over and out. Unnecessary beatdown, though. You’ve got to be kidding me.”
Some have described Fipp’s actions as not only negligent but perhaps even criminal.
