Boxer Gets Frozen In Time From “Punch Of The Year” Contender
While the boxing world was transfixed on the battle between Vasyl Lomachenko and Jose Pedraza over the weekend, it was one of the undercards from the night that delivered, arguably, a far more spectacular spectacle. That is because Teofimo Lopez took a mere 40 seconds to dispose of Mason Menard with a superb knockout leaving the crowd gobsmacked.
It has been a year of fantastic striking with some knockouts for the ages. One thinks back to Dillian ‘The Body Snatcher’ Whyte’s absolutely hectic hit on Lucas Browne back in May. It was a strike so savage that one of the broadcast partners refused to replay it! But you can add this one to the highlight reel as Lopez’s aggression made for a devastating end to the fight.
You can see the offence shown by the Honduran-American on the player below where he uses his footwork to stay in close contact with a flailing Menard. The barrage quickly sees Menard off-balance, out of position and with no hope of holding out.
A well-timed and even better-placed overhand right is all it takes to send the American to the canvas. He is already off balance and going in that direction when the strike comes. Landing firmly on the jaw, Menard falls in slow motion, without anything to break his fall. The ref is in there before he has even hit the ground.
Celebrating wildly, Lopez celebrates with his trademark backflip as doctors and officials attend to Menard who remained motionless for some time after being knocked out. The win also saw Lopez win the vacant NABF lightweight title and a real shot on the world stage at the pointy end of the lightweight division.
