Jacare Walks Forward Like The Terminator And Lands A Nuke On Chris Weidman

When Luke Rockhold was pulled out of his co-main event fight with Chris Weidman at UFC 230, a replacement was already waiting in the wings. Ronaldo ‘Jacaré’ Souza was originally scheduled to be fighting David Branch but was quickly drafted in to face Weidman further up the card.

This isn’t the first time that an injury has forced a Weidman Rockhold rematch to be scrapped. Back at UFC 199, an injured Weidman was unable to face Rockhold for the UFC Middleweight Championship and Michael Bisping was selected to step in on less than 2 weeks notice, and the rest, as they say,  is history…

Tonight’s fight marked Weidman’s return to the cage after more than a years layoff due to a series of recurrent injuries. Prior to that, the All American had bounced back from a disappointing string of defeats, and proven many of his doubters wrong by dominating fellow middleweight contender Kelvin Gastelum at UFC on Fox 25. The American also had hoped prior to the fight to produce a better showing than the last time he had performed at Madison Square Garden, where he was savagely knocked out from a flying knee courtesy of Yoel Romero.

Jacare meanwhile has been working towards the UFC title shot that has so far alluded him during his career. Prior to this fight, the Brazilian had amassed an 8-3 record inside the Octagon but had fallen short in number one contendership fights.  The Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu specialist scored a spectacular finish against fellow main card fighter Derek Brunson back in January, but then came out on the wrong side of a contentious decision against Kelvin Gastelum at UFC 224.

Unlike some of the other fights on the card, it is clear that both men have respect for the others skills and have no disdain between them. This was evidenced at yesterday’s weigh-ins where the pair shook hands before facing off for the crowd.
