Yair Rodriguez Just Defeated ‘Korean Zombie’ With Most Exciting Finish of 2018
Korean Zombie will coming off an over 18 month lay off following his 1st round knockout win over fellow featherweight Denis Bermudez. Prior to this, he didn’t fight for 42 months due to injuries as well as mandatory military service, for his home country South Korea. On one hand, you could argue that the lay-off will not affect Zombie as he already proved that he is able to win after a long time away from the cage, and according to Dominick Cruz ring rust does not excist. On the other hand, KZ has only fought once in the 5 years and that has to account for something.
Yair Rodriguez is also coming off a significant lay-off, having last fought in May of 2017 in a losing effort to Frankie Edgar.
Coincidentally, Rodriguez is coming in on short notice to replace Edgar after he was forced to withdraw with an injury. He was also fired and re-hired during this time period.
Rodriguez had approximately two weeks to prepare for the fight. It is also important to know that the Mexican fighter was forced to withdraw from his fight against Zabit Magomedsharipov at UFC 228 back in September.
The fight was held in Denver, Colorado which is at an elevation of 5280 feet. This is important because elevation can have a significant impact on fighters’ cardio. According to Korean Zombie’s Instagram he arrived in Denver over two weeks ago and thus had time to adapt.
Yair was using Cowboy Cerrones camp to become accustomed to the climate, which definitely played a factor in the result.
The fight was a 5 round war in which Korean Zombie was probably winning the fight.
In incredible fashion Yair pulled off the craziest finish we’ve ever seen, landing a back elbow at 4:59 of the 5th round to knock Zombie out cold.
One of the craziest finishes in UFC history.
